At Emery Village Dental, we're proud to offer services for patients with the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). As your trusted CDCP dentist in North York, we understand that navigating those benefits can feel daunting, and that's why we're providing a general guide for CDCP patients to help them understand their coverage. Here's what you should know.
Deciphering CDCP Coverage
It's important to understand that dental services under the CDCP plan are not covered at 100 percent, unless your family's income is less than $70,000 per year.
In order to qualify for CDCP benefits, your family's adjusted income cannot be more than $90,000 per year. If you make $70,000 to $79,999 per year, your family may be eligible for 60 percent coverage with a 40 percent copay. If your family makes $80,000 to $89,999 per year, you may qualify for 40 percent coverage with a 60 percent copay. If your family makes under $70,000 per year, you may be eligible for 100 percent coverage.
There may also be additional fees associated with the dental practice you work with that you will be responsible for. At Emery Village Dental, we review all treatment needs and fees prior to starting any procedures, so there are no financial surprises for patients, and you are clear on what your out-of-pocket expenses will be.
Which Dental Services Are Covered by CDCP Benefits?
Here is a quick overview of the dental services that are covered by CDCP benefits. You can also find more information about CDCP coverage here.
- Preventive Services — Including professional teeth cleanings, routine or emergency exams, diagnostic x-rays, fluoride application, and dental sealants
- Periodontal Treatment — Deep cleaning under the gumline and non-surgical gum disease management
- Dental Fillings — Designed to eliminate small areas of tooth decay and restore a tooth to health
- Root Canal Treatment — Eliminates tooth infection and pain, while preserving the tooth's natural structure
- Tooth Extraction — To remove problematic teeth that are no longer salvageable
- Complete or Partial Dentures — Removable appliances designed to replace multiple missing teeth or an entire arch
Some dental services require preauthorization with the CDCP before treatment begins.
Which Dental Services Are Not Covered By CDCP Benefits?
There are some dental services the CDCP does not cover:
- Cosmetic Procedures — Such as dental veneers or professional teeth whitening
- Gum Contouring — The CDCP also considers gum reshaping a cosmetic procedure
- Dental Implants — Tooth implants and any associated procedure, such as bone grafting, are not covered
- Orthodontic Treatment — Straightening teeth for aesthetics is not a covered benefit with the CDCP
- TMJ Treatment — The CDCP does not cover jaw joint treatment for disorders
- Gum Surgery — The CDCP only allows non-surgical periodontal treatment as a benefit
If you need orthodontic treatment for medical reasons, there may be exceptions made by the CDCP through preauthorization.
What Is a Preauthorization?
The CDCP may require a preauthorization for specific treatment procedures, typically more complicated ones. Our team will send information to the CDCP for you, which may include x-rays, diagnostic notes from our dentists, and an explanation of treatment needs. The CDCP reviews the information and determines whether coverage will be provided for the recommended treatment.
This typically takes a few weeks and occurs before any procedure is completed to ensure there are no financial surprises for patients.
