North York Gum Surgery

close up of dental mirror being used to look at patient's teeth in north yorkPicture your house. Without its foundation, it would crumble to the ground. The same can be said of your gums and your teeth. Your gums and jawbone provide support and a healthy foundation for your teeth. If your support system becomes compromised, so do your teeth. Regular visits to your dentist every six months is also another way to protect your smile against problems like gum disease.

Periodontal (gum) disease is a common problem that is widely prevalent among adults over the age of thirty. Gum disease is an infection that affects the soft tissues and bone that support your teeth. If you leave this infection untreated, the damage progresses and could even result in tooth loss. The truth is, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

The good news, however, is that Dr. Joo has extensive training in treating gum disease and creating healthy smiles, and he can even perform different types of gum surgeries here in our North York dental office instead of having to refer you to a specialist.

When Do We Recommend Gum Grafting Surgery?

We can complete a gum graft surgery from start to finish at Emery Village Dental. Our dentists may suggest a gum grafting procedure in these situations.

Root Exposure

Exposed roots can be painful or sensitive and can result in further damage without gum grafting.

Gum Recession

Severe gum recession can lead to exposed roots and bone loss without a gum grafting procedure.

Advanced Gum Disease

Gum grafting surgery helps protect your teeth and prevent the loss that occurs with periodontitis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have you ever felt like your teeth are too short? Or that you have a "gummy" smile? Do these issues cause you to feel self-conscious about the appearance of your smile?

Gum contouring may be the solution you need to enhance your smile.

Gum contouring is a procedure that uses a dental laser to eliminate the excess gum tissue that's covering your teeth and hiding your smile.

During gum contouring treatment, the laser combines heat and light into a precise point that removes the excess tissue and shapes it appealingly around your tooth. With the laser, there's no need for cutting during your procedure, which accelerates healing time.

We can typically complete gum contouring during a straightforward procedure at our North York dental office. Depending on how much tissue we remove, your healing time can be a few days to a couple weeks. You'll need to stick to soft foods for the first few days and be careful and gentle during oral hygiene for the first week or two.

Gum grafting surgery is a procedure that grafts healthy soft tissue from other areas of your mouth and replaces the lost tissue around your teeth. The new tissue integrates over a period of about two weeks with your remaining tissue providing better support and protection for the roots of your teeth.

Instead of referring you to a specialist, Dr. Joo has the skills and training to perform gum grafting surgery here at our North York dental office.

When you suffer from periodontal disease, an infection attacks your gums and soft tissues. The infection can cause gum recession, and unfortunately, your gums won't heal or regenerate independently. When your gums recede, your roots may become exposed, which can be very painful and also allows bacteria to reach your jawbone.

Periodontal Disease Prevention

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. However, it is also a condition that you may be able to avoid with an excellent home care routine and consistent visits to your dentist every six months for teeth cleanings and checkups.

Gum recession looks different for every patient. Some of the common factors that cause or contribute to receding gums are:

  • Periodontal (gum) disease: An infection of the gums and bone that support your teeth.
  • Hormonal changes: A prevalent hormonal change, such as those associated with puberty or pregnancy, can contribute to gum recession.
  • Tooth misalignment:  Tooth and bite misalignment can cause uneven pressure on the gums, resulting in recession.
  • Vigorous brushing: Brushing your teeth too hard can actually damage delicate gum tissue and cause recession.
  • Bruxism (tooth grinding and clenching):  Consistent bruxism can result in undue pressure on your gums and lead to recession.
  • Lip and tongue piercings: These items can rub against gum tissue and wear it away.
  • Tobacco use: Using tobacco products lowers your immune system, making it more difficult for your gums to heal from trauma or infection.
  • Genetics: Some people are predisposed to having thinner gum tissue that is more susceptible to recession.

How Do We Treat Gum Recession?

Gum recession treatment is tailored to each patient's unique needs. Our dentists may discuss non-surgical options, such as orthodontic treatment or scaling and root planing (a procedure that cleans below the gumline).

We also perform gum grafting surgery at our North York dental clinic, which uses tissues from other areas of your mouth to replace receded gums.

Gum Grafting in North York

As it progresses, gum disease slowly destroys the healthy tissue and bone that support your teeth. An infection in your gums can contribute to recession and result in painful root exposure.

Dr. Joo can eliminate root exposure and gum recession through a procedure called gum grafting. This procedure utilizes healthy gum tissue from another source that Dr. Joo adds to your own, allowing it to heal and integrate with your own gum tissue. It typically takes around two weeks to heal from a gum grafting procedure.

Gum tissue does not regenerate on its own, so gum grafting surgery is an excellent option for restoring lost gum tissue and protecting your teeth once again.
